Note: There is an opinion that the propelling pencil was invented by John Isaac Hawkins with Sampson Mordan and that Gabriel Riddle was a manufacturer.
1824 John Isaac Hawkins, Civil Engineer, became a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.[3]
George Escol Sellers held Hawkins in high regard, and recorded that while in the USA he invented and constructed a lathe for turning oval picture frames, and a musical instrument called a clavial (not a success).
He developed a vacuuum evaporating process for sugar refining, w
