          Dame Carol Mary BlackGBE FRCP (born 26 December 1939) is a British physician, academic, specialising in rheumatology.

        5. She was President of the Royal College of Physicians from 2002 to 2006, advised the British Government on the relationship between work and health from 2006 to 2016, and was Principal of Newnham College, Cambridge, from 2012 to 2019.

          She is an expert on the disease scleroderma.

          Early life and student years

          An only child, Black was born into an unacademic family in Barwell, Leicestershire. She attended grammar school in the 1950s where she became head girl.[1][2]

          She studied history at Bristol University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in 1962.[3] She then worked as a schoolteacher in the Gilbert and Ellice Islands.[1]

          In 1965, Black enrolled as a mature student in the first intake of 'pre-clinical' medical students to Bristol University
